For this card I completely had this planned in my head what I was going to do with the card but then I made a boo-boo and had to modify the card to fix my mistakes! (yes, that’s plural – I am a clumsy crafter)
First I knew I wanted to make a circular shaped card so used a large circle die which was 5 and half inches in diameter. I placed this on some kraft-coloured card which was folded in half and positioned the die so there would be a hinge on the card (and it wouldn’t cut 2 circles)
This card isn’t as sturdy as a lot of kraft cardstock so I made an extra little hinge from the leftover card and glued it on the inside. I also wanted the card to stand up and not roll anywhere so I cut a small slither opposite the hinge so this would be top-folding.
Now I had my base done, I cut out a smaller circle from smooth white card. This was just under 5″ in diameter. I took my blending brushes and some distress oxides to create a sunset coloured background. I love these colours together; they blend really nicely and look so pretty.
Once done, I got my palm trees die from Lawn Fawn. I only wanted the silhouette but didn’t much black card stock to hand so just cut part of this die from some dark green scrap card and inked over it in distress ink in black soot.
I glued this onto my sunset background and trimmed off the excess.
To add the metallic element, I used the same circle dies and cut a frame to go round the sunset part of the card. I used some gold metallic paper for this.
I’d also stamped and die cut some tropical flowers which I glued around the gold frame.
Now, here’s where mistakes were made. I wanted to use a couple of different stamps to make the sentiment. My intention was to have the ‘birthday’ part of the card cut out a few times from a birthday die and stacked to make it more dimensional. This part I got right! I wanted to then stamp on “relax” from one stamp set and “on your” from another, direct onto the background and heat emboss them with some clear embossing powder. For some reason, even though I had an idiot moment and didn’t mask the stamp properly, nor did I cover the right words! So the result was this:-
I was going to scrap the whole thing at this point because I was like “WHAT DO I DO? I’VE RUINED IT!” but then I took a breath and realised I would just have to use sentiment strips rather than the background. This annoyed me a bit but I’d come to far! So I stamped the sentiments I wanted to use (properly masked this time) onto some black strips and heat embossed in white. I then glued on one and for reasons completely unknown to me I decided to put the “relax” part on mini foam squares. I hadn’t looked atht ecard standing up again at this point (so I hadn’t noticed how weird this looked) and decided to use a clear glitter pen so go over the sentiments. I needed to squeeze a bit of liquid into the barrel and in my infinite wisdom did this while holding the pen over the card and got a massive drop of liquid glitter onto my background. WHY DID I DO THIS?!
Once I stood this up I knew I needed to get rid of the foam behind the ‘Relax” strip so I peeled this off carefully, removed the foam squares and used glue to stick back over the mess I’d left behind. Still, what to do with the unsightly blob on my gorgeous sunset? I had a think and a look round and decided the best thing was to make more flowers to stick on the which I could ‘cascade’ down to cover the blob. I added some more glitter pen to the flowers too. Thankfully this turned out okay! It’s not perfect but I’m happy I carried on and didn’t give up!
So if you have a card and have made a major error – carry on with it or at least save it for another time when you’ve figured out how to fix it!
